Hello world!!! I’m MH Mamun from Freelancer Bangladesh. Today I’m going to share with you how to open Upwork account step-by-step. So, let’s begin…
Upwork makes it easy to find and work with high-quality talent and agencies. Simply sign up, post your project, and review proposals to find the perfect independent contractor or agency for your needs.
Is Upwork Good For Beginners?
Upwork can be a great way to start a freelancing career. You can browse through millions of jobs and find the ones that suit your skills. However, as a beginner, you may face some challenges, such as a lack of experience and competition.
If you’re looking to get started as a freelancer on Upwork, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to register. I also go over some of the possible issues you may encounter with your Upwork account, such as getting banned or violating Upwork’s rules. Additionally, you’ll find my advice on how to fill out your Upwork profile. Keep in mind that you’ll need to write some information about yourself during registration, or Upwork may not allow you to create an account.
Go to upwork.com and click the button “Signup”.
If you plan to use Upwork as a freelancer and as a client, you do not need to create two separate accounts. You can create a client account which will be based on your freelancer account after registration.
Additionally, having two accounts is a Terms of Service violation and results in a permanent ban for both accounts. So, if you already have an account on Upwork, do not try to create a new one (for example, if you have a bad reputation in your previous profile). If you’ve lost access to your old account (for example, forgot your password), you should contact support.
Name and Email
You can join as a client or freelancer. Select your preferred options and hit the “Create Account” button. If you want to hire or wants to complete your project you can proceed to “Join as a Client“. Or if you want to work or looking for jobs you can procced with “Join as a Freelancer“.
Only use Latin characters for your first and last name on Upwork- this should match the name on your passport. You may be asked to provide additional documents to verify your identity in the future.
If you don’t have a document with your name written in Latin letters, you’ll need to figure out how to transliterate your name into the Latin alphabet correctly. Each country has its own transliteration rules, so you’ll need to look them up online.
In order to complete the registration process, you will need to enter a valid email address. Once you have done this, you will receive a verification email. Without this email, you will not be able to continue with the registration process.
It’s important to make sure your email account is well-protected. A strong password (16 characters) is a must, and 2-factor authentication is even better. Be sure to set up a phone number for your email account so you can recover access if something goes wrong. There are plenty of stories online from people who have lost their Upwork accounts (and all the money they’ve earned) because they didn’t have proper email protection.
Upwork recommends that you use a work email for registration. For example, if you enter an email with the domain gmail.com and press “Get Started”, you will not be able to proceed to the next step. You will receive a warning that you must use a work email, not Gmail. If you try to register an email on another domain, you will just receive the same warning. To continue with the registration process on Upwork, simply press “Get Started” again and Upwork will accept your “non-working” email.
Login and Password
The next step is called “Complete your account”
Be sure to include accurate information about your current address – this is typically the country of your citizenship, unless you are in the process of obtaining another citizenship.
The password must be 16 characters long, with a mix of upper and lowercase letters of the English alphabet, and numbers. Special characters (% # @! …) should not be used, as they can be difficult to enter on mobile devices. You can use online password generators to create a strong password. Make sure to use a unique password that you haven’t used on other websites. If other sites you use are compromised, your Upwork account could be at risk.
If you find it difficult to remember a long and complicated password, you can use a phrase with symbols and numbers instead. For example, “!L1keNewY0rk“.
If you think that I’m paranoid, then you can use your favorite password “Qwerty1990” or something like that. But when you can not log into your account after years of work and earned reputation and with several thousand dollars on your account, you will definitely remember my advice. This situation is similar to a joke “System administrators can be divided into two groups: those who do not make backups and those who’ve already done them.” It’s important to use a good password before you find out pain of hacking your accounts.
Upwork will ask you to specify a password and then choose a role to perform on the platform – client or freelancer. Click on “Join as a freelancer” and continue.
You will need to specify a username. It’s usually best to use your email address as your username so it will be easy for you to remember. For example, if your email is [email protected], then your login will be bond007. Login is not generally displayed anywhere and is only used for logging into the Upwork platform (although you can use email for login). However, after several years on Upwork, I think it is impossible to predict what changes freelancers should expect from the platform in the future, so it is better to insure yourself and create a login that you can remember.
Although it is not necessary to check the “Receive news emails” field, it is highly recommended. By doing so, you may receive spam from the platform; however, you may also receive useful news and suggestions.
The last checkbox is related to the platform’s Terms of Service. I would advise not just to press it, but read at least the table of contents of the ToS so you can be aware of any potential issues.
To do this go to your email and click on the link.
The most important thing when creating a profile is to fill in the basic information. You should also include a photo of yourself so that people can see what you look like.
After clicking on the link, you will be asked to provide information about your profession. This is the first step in filling out your profile. To finish registration and get your profile approved, you will need to specify some basic data during registration. You can change and add more information in the future if you want.
First, you need to choose your specialization. For example, if you’re interested in web development, you could choose to specialize in web design, front-end development, or back-end development. If you’re interested in mobile development, you could choose to specialize in iOS development or Android development. If you’re interested in software development, you could choose to specialize in desktop application development, embedded systems development, or game development.
After that, you need to select several categories that you are engaged in, like “Mobile Development” and “Game Development”. Although you are allowed to choose up to 4 categories of work, it is better to choose 1-2, which are more relative to your skills. This will increase your chances of being found by potential clients.
In addition to specifying your skills, you should also write the name of the skill and select it from the drop-down list. Usually, these are the names of technologies, software, and techniques that are related to your work. I recommend that you choose 5-6 skills that are most related to your specialization.
The level of payment on Upwork is determined by the freelancer’s experience level. Upwork recommends that clients pay up to $15 per hour for entry-level freelancers, $15 to $30 for intermediate-level freelancers, and $30 or more for expert-level freelancers. I would not recommend choosing an entry-level freelancer, as clients often associate this level with poor quality of work. Choosing between an intermediate and expert freelancer depends on your confidence in your skills.
Additional profile information
Click “ Save & Continue” and go to the next step.
I recommend you look at the example profiles Upwork has to offer. This will help you create a profile that is more likely to pass the approval process.
Let’s start with a photo:
- Only upload a photo of yourself – images, logos, etc. will not work.
- A photo that has been edited or tampered with in any way will not be accepted. This includes any obvious signs of correction, such as airbrushing or excessive use of Photoshop.
- The photo you upload for your profile should be a clear headshot where your face is visible and centered. This will ensure that your profile photo looks good when it is cropped into a circle by Upwork.
- The photo must be of good quality.
- Use photos with a simple background because the focus might be on you.
Your title should be specific to your skills and experience. Upwork recommends something along the lines of “Expert Android developer.” However, including the word “Expert” is not necessary as it is not useful. Almost all freelancers on Upwork put “Expert” in their profile, so clients do not recognize it. A better title would be “Android developer.” Do not use an abstract title, such as “Web developer.” It is better to write a specific technology, framework, or area/functionality of work.
Writing an overview can be a difficult and time-consuming process, so it’s a topic for a separate article. However, at this stage you need to write a small overview, otherwise Upwork may not accept your account. My guidelines:
- Re-read your text several times to check for mistakes.
- Don’t put your name. It is already in your profile header.
- Don’t put abstract phrases, which you can find in almost all profiles, like ”Hello, I have 5 years experience in…” Tell clients how you can be useful for them instead;
- Don’t put any link (forbidden by ToS);
- Don’t use lists. Convert all information in several sentences;
- Tell about your past experience related to current Upwork profile specialization. Don’t put information about design if you have developer profile;
- Describe software, technologies, which you use for work;
- At this stage make overview at least 500 letters length.
Add Education and Employment History. At least one option in each.
In the Education section, it is best to specify the university you attended (if it is not in the drop-down list, simply type in the school’s name as text). If you did not study at a university, indicate your high school instead. Include the name of the educational institution, the year(s) you studied there, and the degree you earned, which you must select from the drop-down list. For students who have been studying for 5 years, this is usually a “Master of…”. The Area of Study is optional but highly recommended. In the description, you can add information about the courses and areas that you have studied, but this is not necessary at this stage.
Describe only related to your current Upwork profile specialization work experience:
- Company name in English
- City and Country;
- Position and role of your business in the company
- Years of work;
- In the description, you can add technologies and projects you participated in. But at this stage, you can skip this.
Finally, you choose your English skill level. In the future, you may be asked to confirm your level of English through video chat (you will need to say your name, perhaps the address and profession). If you choose the Basic level, clients may think “Basic – don’t know English at all”, anyway this choice depends on your self-confidence: if you are not ready to communicate with clients through video/audio chats, then it’s better not to put the fluent level of English.
The hourly rate you charge for your services should be based on your level of experience and expertise. entry-level freelancers should charge no less than $15 per hour, while more experienced professionals can charge $30 or more per hour. Keep in mind that many clients are unwilling to work with low-rated freelancers, so you may want to avoid charging less than $15 per hour.
Availability and Location
You need to provide information about availability and location.
How much you can spend on work:
- Up to 30 hours per week, if you have another job
- More than 30 hours, otherwise.
You won’t have to work more than 30 hours a week unless you want to. We’ll work with you to figure out a schedule that works for both of us.
Project duration: Most of the time, you’ll want to choose “Both long and short-term projects” when creating a project on Upwork. This gives you the flexibility to work with the freelancer on an as-needed basis. In some cases, you may already know exactly what you need from a freelancer. If that’s the case, you can specify long or short projects accordingly.
Address and Phone
Please provide a real and existing address in English. This is not required at this step but you may be asked to confirm your address in the future.
In order to indicate the city, in the first column we write the region, and in the second – city itself. If you don’t know your address’ zip code, you can find it at your nearest post office or online.
The last column is the phone number. It’s better to specify a real one so it will be easier to restore access to your account in an unexpected situation.
Congratulations on completing registration! Your account will need to be approved before you can start working, which usually takes 24 hours. You will be notified by email when your account has been approved.
There are several ways you can withdraw money from your Upwork account:
- via PayPal
- by check
- by wire transfer
To withdraw money from your account, simply go to the ‘Billing’ section and select the ‘Withdraw Funds’ option. From there, you can choose how you would like to receive your payment.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best option for you will depend on your specific requirements and location. For example, PayPal is easy to use for freelancers from Europe and the USA, but it usually takes high fees. Wire transfer is only profitable for large amounts (fixed fee per action). Payoneer is easy to use for freelancers from any country, including the USA, Europe, Asia (Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India), and others. It takes reasonable fees but has some limitations.
If you want to support me, you can do so by using my Payoneer affiliate link. By doing this, we both earn a $25 bonus once you’ve earned your first $1000 in your Payoneer account. I’m always open to sharing the pros and cons of Payoneer so that you can make an informed decision.
To withdraw money from your Upwork account, you’ll need to fill out some tax information first. To do this, go to your profile settings and fill out the Tax Information section.
For non-residents of the US, it is important to complete the W-8BEN form in a simplified online format.
Otherwise, the Get Paid button will not be active.
- Settings. (Your name at the header)->Settings
- Tax Information.
- If you are not a US resident, select “I am not a U.S. person.” In the Legal Name of Business column, enter your first and last name in English or your organization name. Leave your address unchanged and select the check mark to agree to the rules. For US citizens, you must provide detailed tax information, including name, address, SSN, and other documents.
